Mr. Luigi U. DeBernardo was posthumously honored by R. Max Peterson, Chief of the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture at the 74th annual Western Forestry and Conservation Association meeting. He was honored for his years of work as the nation’s leading authority on spark arresters. Spark arresters, by preventing hot carbon from escaping from an engine’s exhaust, have reduced the number of forest, brush and grass fires that occur each year.

Fire Chief Curtis V. Reynolds was honored with an award from Los Angeles County/ University of Southern California Medical Center. Each year, paramedics assigned to the medical center’s paramedic base station are honored in various categories of expertise. The award recognized Chief Reynolds’ dedication to prehospital care and his involvement with the training of resident physicians by permitting them to spend time riding with the paramedic squads, and meeting with them to discuss administrative aspects of management. The award also acknowledged the chief’s and the Burbank Fire Department’s efforts in providing the “Rescue and Extrication Seminar for Medical Personnel,” a two day course providing hands-on training for doctors and nurses in stabilization and extrication of victims from wreckage and fires.
