New York, NY — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) obligated $1.45 million today to the state of New York to assist New York City rebuild Engine 10 & Ladder 10 firehouse at 124 Liberty St. in lower Manhattan. The three-story structure sustained heavy damage on Sept. 11 due to its proximity to the World Trade Center.
The $1,451,442 in public assistance funding will reimburse the Fire Department of New York for costs associated with the repair and restoration of the facility, which was constructed in 1979. Damaged areas and systems of “10 House,” as it is called, included the roof, parapets and external masonry; ventilation system; windows and doors; electrical system and emergency generator; interior ceilings, floors and walls; and exterior sidewalks, curbing and ramps. Although the damage was significant as a result of falling debris from the World Trade Towers, “10 House” escaped structural damage to the foundation and exterior walls.
With this latest release of funds to the FDNY, the total amount obligated to date to the state of New York for emergency response and recovery work is more than $1.09 billion.
The grant is funded through the FEMA / State of New York Public Assistance Program. Following his disaster declaration after the Sept. 11 tragedy, President Bush authorized FEMA to pay for 100 percent of the program costs. Public assistance reimburses government agencies and certain non-profits providing a government-like service for eligible disaster-related damages and costs not covered by insurance.
Among the categories eligible for reimbursement are debris removal, emergency protective measures and the repair or restoration of damaged public facilities.
