>> The Ashland Volunteer Fire Department, McAlester, Oklahoma, protects a rural area with wildlands and roads integrated with hay fields, explains Chief Kenny Weiher. The department uses this WEIS FIRE & SAFETY attack truck for hay fires and structure fire response.

>> The Stoneham (MA) Fire Department designed this SEAGRAVE pumper with a large water tank to help compensate the loss of an engine because of budget cuts, explains Chief Joseph Rolli. The city is a suburban area with two major highways running through it, so class “B” foam capabilities were needed.

>> The Big Fork (MT) Fire Department designed this SMEAL ladder truck as an aerial rather than a platform because it would be less bulky and easier to fit on many narrow and winding roads, explains Assistant Chief Nat O’Farrell. The department covers an area that has many houses on steep slopes, requiring extra penetrating outriggers (allows 100-percent tipload on slopes of 5° to 7°). Setbacks also dictated a longer ladder. The truck responds as an engine and as a ladder company.
