Firefighters that receive advance training are better prepared to protect themselves and residents of their community during emergency operations. Now, thanks to a $10,000 grant, Fairfield (CT) Fire Department firefighters will receive the best hands-on training possible. The donation to the Fairfield (CT) Fire Department was awarded by Jeff Rubin, Senior Vice President of HUB International Northeast, and Amy Malanaphy, Territorial Sales Executive for Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company. According to Fireman’s Fund representative Danny Perry, grant funds are earmarked for specialized training focused on safely extricating victims from motor vehicle accidents, rescue operations in confined spaces, rescues involving the use of ropes, and mixed company operations focused on the usage of pumper and aerial trucks. “For the majority of fire departments, funding for training is often limited, especially in this economic climate,” said Fairfield Fire Chief Richard Felner. “This specialized training will greatly enhance our current capabilities, enabling our firefighters to provide a higher level of emergency service to the community as well as the region.”

Rubin went on to state, “These firefighters risk their lives everyday, so it’s essential they have the proper training to do their jobs safely and effectively.” Local officials including Deputy Chief of Staff Jennifer Carpenter representing First Selectman Kenneth Flatto, Fairfield Fire Commission Chairman Richard Popilowski, Commissioners Susan Barrett and Felix Giannini, Probate Judge Dan Caruso, and Fairfield Fire Fighters Association President Bob Smith joined Chief Felner and Fairfield firefighters as executives from HUB International Limited and Fireman’s Fund officially presented a ceremonial check for $10,000 to Chief Felner at Fire Headquarters this morning.
After presentations by Deputy Chief of Staff Carpenter, Chairman Richard Popilowski, Local 1426 President Bob Smith, HUB Senior Vice President Rubin and Fireman’s Fund Executive Malanaphy, Chief Felner discussed the specialized training the department’s firefighters will receive. The grant package is part of a nationwide philanthropic program funded by Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company. The program is designed to provide needed equipment, training and educational tools to local fire departments. Since 2004, Fireman’s Fund has issued grants to over 1,100 different departments totaling more than $20 million. Independent insurance agencies/brokers that sell Fireman’s Fund products, like HUB International Limited, are able to direct these grants to support fire departments.
