■ In Oregon, the Keizer Fire Protection District covers about 21 square miles and serves a population of 23,500. Division Chief Randy Jackson reports that many types and brands of apparatus were considered and test-driven during the selection process. All the district’s other apparatus are mounted on commercial chassis. The major concern was meeting NFPA recommendations, especially since the crew cab is fully enclosed. A typical engine company response is six firefighters, and this cab makes it possible for the four responders in the rear of the cab to have SCBA donned when they arrive at the scene.

The pumper, built by Pierce on a Lance chassis, has a 188-inch wheelbase and high side compartments that house two extra air packs, covers, saws, extinguishers, and rope.

I’he unit has a Waterous 1,250-gpm, single-stage pump and carries 1,000 gallons of water. An LDH discharge is on the right side of the apparatus. Four 1 ⅛-inch crosslay preconnects are mounted behind the cab (two are accessible from each side); a 1¾and a 2’/2-inch preconnect are at the rear. (Photo by Scott Morrison.)

■ The communit} of Fast Grecnbush, New York, is 60 percent residential; 10 percent high-density multiple-dwelling, such as garden apartments and townhouses; 20 percent commercial: and 10 percent light industry.

Assistant Chief Timothy Boel says the impact study for the purchase of the department’s Simon-Duplex-LTI platform took the 100-member department more than four years to complete. Some of the focal points considered were an increase in two-, three-, and fourstory multiple dwellings; large ground cover commercial complexes well in excess of 100,000 square feet; a major shipping port that stores more than 10 million gallons of petroleum; and. of course, firefighter safety.

T he apparatus is LTTs ST-2000, featuring a 100-foot ladder tower with a five-inch prepiped waterway to feed two TFT Monsoon 2,000and 2,500-gpm nozzles at the bucket. The bucket has a 1,000-lb. payload capacity. Its outrigger spread is 18 feet. It has a Hale singlestage. 1.750-gpm pump with a six-inch intake at the left, right, and rear. The unit features two l .-inch attack lines and a 1 ‘/2-inch booster line and carries 4(30 feet of four-inch hose. The water tank holds 300 gallons The unit is mounted on a Spartan Gladiator chassis, has an air-conditioned cab. and seats 10.

■ The Lawrence Township Fire Department, located northeast of Indianapolis, Indiana, protects a rapidly growing surburban community. It is a combination fire department, which has increased from 10 to 71 career firefighters within seven years, explains Chief J. Whitaker. The department protects various occupancy loads from residential to industrial and high-tech manufacturing. Interstate Highways 69 and 465 cross within the district. The population ranges from 55,000 at night to more than 100,000 during the day. The Pierce pumper was designed to handle fires and emergencies in mixed occupancies and with safety of the firefighters in mind. The pumper is mounted on an Arrow chassis and has a four-door cab that seats four. The unit has a 178.5-inch wheelbase and a 10-inch extended front bumper.

The Waterous two-stage, 1,250-gpm pump has side intakes only; they are set up for five-inch hose, of which 1,000 feet is carried.

For heavy-stream operation, an Elkhart Stinger with 1,000-gpm nozzle is prepiped by three-inch pipe to the pump. For attack purposes, a 2’/2-inch wye connected to two 100-foot lengths of 1 inch hose with TFT nozzles is provided. A midship-mounted booster reel has 200 feet of one-inch line. The unit carries 54 feet of ground ladders. The pumper has a three-kw Onan diesel generator, which runs off the vehicle’s fuel tank, and two 1.000-watt telescoping floodlights mounted one on each side forward of the booster reel. Warning devices include seven-inch warning lights on each side and the rear, and a light bar with stinger option.

■ The Mount Olive (NC) Rescue Squad provides emergency medical and rescue service to about 12,000 residents of Mount Olive and portions of Wayne and Duplin Counties. Spokesman Anthony P. Kelly says the rescue vehicle supports four ambulances and another older 4×4 rescue vehicle in an area that is mostly rural but has U.S. Highways 55 and 117 passing through it. Most of the calls are accident-related.

The unit is built by Hackney & Sons. Inc., and is mounted on a Ford F-350 chassis with a 160-inch wheelbase. It is powered by a Ford gasoline engine and automatic transmission. The body is aluminum with six equipment compartments and cab seating for two. The vehicle is equipped with four-wheel drive.

A six-kw, gasoline-driven Echo generator is carried, along with four 500-watt Kwik-Raze telescoping floodlights (two at the front and two at rear of the body). Railing for equipment storage is provided on top of the body. Roll-up doors cover the compartments.

■ The Nevada Division of Forestry is operating three quick-attack engines similar to the engine shown. The engines joined a statewide fleet of some 160 structural, brush, and quick-attack pumpers and 30 water tenders that help protect 8.77 million acres of rural and urban interface areas under NDF jurisdiction, according to Captain Michael Klug, who explains that the unit shown is equipped for first response to structural alarms and medical emergencies as well as for wildland fires.

The units, built by T & N Manufacturing, are mounted on a Chevrolet Cheyenne 3500 one-ton, four-wheel drive chassis. They carry 200 gallons of water and have a 20-hp auxiliary pump motor driving a 125-gpm centrifugal pump, allowing pump-and-roll capability. The pump has a 1 ½-inch intake with two-inch tank-to-pump plumbing. It can supply a 1 ‘/2-inch attack line or a long wildland hoselav. The vehicle body, a standardized NDF design, has eight tool compartments.
