STRUCTURAL FIREFIGHTING HELMET

The F-2000 helmet from Gallet USA, Inc., integrates breathing apparatus, in-helmet radio communications, neck curtains and hood, lighting, and two different systems of eye and face protection. The helmet doubles the protected surface area of the head while reducing the helmet profile.

APPARATUS INTERCOM

FIRECOM’s apparatus intercom is designed to allow for instantaneous communication between the radio, the officer, and anyone riding on the apparatus, ensuring updates are heard by the entire crew for quicker response on the fireground. Features include a digital message recorder equipped with one megabyte of voice memory to record up to 32 seconds of information, continuous radio monitoring (radio is not affected by the intercom system), voice-activation with noise cancellation, and noise-attenuating headsets.

FIRE DISPATCH VOICE UNIT

The Dispatch Synthesized Voice Unit (DSVU) from GCN Electronics, Inc., improves response time by automatically voicing the dispatch message to the fire station while the dispatcher is still on the phone with the caller. The system has been shown to save as much as a minute and a half in response time. The DSVU eliminates the need for dedicated phone lines to each fire station; the unit shares the same line as the station’s printer. It also helps eliminate misrelayed information and provides more information to stations than a simple alarm.

RESPIRATORY EQUIPMENT

Survivair has available the Sigma pressuredemand supplied-air respirator (SAR) and Sigma Hip-Pac. The new units utilize the same face piece as the Sigma self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA); conversion kits are available. With the SAR and Hip-Pac, a waist-strap-mounted regulator allows users to keep the regulator in a stand-by mode. Standard features include clear-speaking diaphragm and five-strap head harness and skirt.

PERSONNEL ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEM

A new personnel tracking system is available from Asset Tracking Services, Inc. With the system, identification cards that each feature a bar code are assigned to personnel. Vital information about the individuals to which they are assigned is contained within the bar code. At the start of every duty period, a list of personnel with their identification numbers and unit assignment is downloaded into a handheld bar-code reader. At the scene of any emergency, the cards of assigned personnel are collected and scanned. All pertinent information is thus displayed and stored. When personnel exit the hazardous area, the cards are scanned again so exit times can be recorded. The scanning device is designed for operation in hazardous locations.

VENTILATION BLADE

M.V.I. Inc. has introduced the Warthog “ carbide-tipped saw blade designed for fire department venting operations. Each oversized carbide rip is mounted to the blade by a special process that cushions the tip mounting to help prevent tip loss. The Warthog’” fits any cutoff-type saw that lias a 7*or oneinch arbor and can accommodate an 11-inch blade.

HOSELINE DIRECTION INDICATOR

The Bernard EASY EXIT, created by firefighters following the death of a fellow firefighter, incorporates prominently raised, brightly colored arrows to help firefighters see and feel the correct direction along a hoseline for safe exit. The system, which consists of raised-arrow rings that slip over exiting hoseline, meets the requirements of the UL 94 V-O rating and has passed tests for ozone resistance.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION SYSTEM

The S.E.E.S. System (Snaplight Emergency Evacuation System) from Omniglow Corporation incorporates chemical light technology from Omniglow, photoluminescence from TRIEX Corporation, and engineering from Cortina Tool and Molding Company. Each of the system’s 10 photoluminescent units houses two 30-minute yellow Snaplight lightsticks. The 10 units can be strategically installed throughout a building (one system per medium two-story building). When a blackout occurs, the photoluminescent panel allows individuals to find their way to the evacuation system.
