Chester County, South Carolina, is located in the north-central part of the state between Columbia and Charlotte, North Carolina. It is a residential community with rapidly growing industrial and commercial potential. Major highways in the area include 321, 72, 21,9, and 1-77. The Chester Fire Department serves a fire district with a population of about 21,000. It dispatches all 10 volunteer fire departments in the county.

Fire Chief David T. McAbee explains that a large area of Chester and most other areas of the county do not have hydrant water supplies available. Thus, the department chose a 1,250-gallon water tank for the pumper, which will be used on mutual-aid calls as well as in the district.

The pumper is built by Emergency One on an International 49(X) chassis with a four-door cab and seating for five. The chief states that the commercial cab offers a good amount of headroom while being less expensive than a custom cal’). The pumper lias a 250-inch wheelbase and is powered by an International DTA-466 diesel engine with an Allison MT-643 automatic transmission.

‘ITie pump is a single-stage, 1,250-gpm Hale QSG with a threeinch pipe to feed a 1,250-gpm Akron Apollo monitor located next to a midship-mounted booster reel. A Federal Nightfighter light is located midship, as well. Attack lines include four 1‘/2-inch preconnects (two in crosslays and two in the rear; one is for foam) plus a 1 Viinch rear preconnect. The unit has an Akron foam eductor and carries 25 gallons of AFFF. Storage compartments carry pike poles and an attic ladder.

H Montrose, New York, is about 12 square miles in area with a population of about 12,000. Railroad crossings, the Hudson River, and U.S. Highway 9 run through the district.

Commissioner John E. Jackson refers to the pumper shown here as a “self-sustaining” fire scene apparatus. The commissioner says the pumper was planned with a maximum amount of storage space. This is afforded by 15 storage compartments, four of which have roll-out trays.

The unit was built by Emergency Equipment Inc. (EE1) on a Pemfab tilt-cab chassis with cab seating for 10. The single-stage, 2,000gpm Hale pump has top-mount controls, a five-inch front intake, and a four-inch discharge. There are two 1 ‘/.’-inch preconnects in the front bumper and two 2*/2-inch preconnects in the rear. A four-inch pipe feeds an Akron monitor with a 1,000-gpm nozzle. The unit carries 1,600 feet of five-inch hose and a 500-gallon water tank. The overall length of the vehicle is 36 feet.

One special feature of the vehicle is a four-head sprinkler system prepiped from two 1 ‘/^-inch discharges and operated from the pump panel. The commissioner says the sprinkler’s primary purpose is to cool down personnel in hot weather; it also serves as protection for the truck.

Other features of the vehicle include a hydraulic ladder rack, 1 ‘/tinch hard rubber booster line, two 1,000-watt and six 500-watt Havis-Shield telescoping floodlights, and two sets of Federal Nightfighter floodlights.

In Minnesota, the Spring Lake Fire Department is operating this tractor-drawn aerial ladder truck built by Seagrave. The truck, built with a Model JT tractor, measures 62 feet, 1V⅜ inches in total length; department member Jay Bohan says it was designed to maneuver in and out of cul-de-sacs and negotiate tight road access areas, such as those at apartment complexes near the fire station. According to Bohan, the department’s previous aerial apparatus had problems in these parts of town. The department also operates an elevating platform; the department chief wanted the aerial attack versatility offered by having both types of vehicles.

The unit has an enclosed tiller seat and seating for 10 in the tractor, which can offer temporary refuge during Minnesota winters.

The 110-foot, steel aerial has a 4’/.-inch prepiped waterway fed by a five-inch intake on each side of the trailer in front of the high-side compartments. The truck carries 100 feet of five-inch hose. There is a total of 16 storage compartments on the vehicle. Six 500-watt telescoping floodlights are located on the truck and a six-kw, diesel-driven Onan generator is carried. (Photo by Paul R. Barrett.)
