The first of planned monthly full-dress fire drills was held at Hall County Jail in Grand Island. Neb., in an effort to prevent prisoners from becoming fire statistics.

Jailers wore breathing apparatus with face shields covered with opaque material to simulate working in dense smoke last April.

Reuben Loos, corrections director, said it was the first drill in the jail since January 1976. The biggest fear of rescue workers is dropping the master key to cell doors in the dense smoke.
