L.A. Fire Fighters Awarded Master’s Degrees

Thirteen members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department have gaduated from Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif., with what is believed to be the first master’s degree in fire service administration in the nation.

The fully accredited program was jointly developed by the Pepperdine University School of Education and the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Members of the class completed 30 units of graduate work in one year, all work being completed on a modified weekend-type schedule. They were required to complete research papers dealing with diagnosing and improving institutional systems being used by the L.A. County Fire Department.

Graduates of the class were Division Assistant Chief Earl Fordham; Battalion Chiefs Peter Pederson and Fred Morton; Captains Ken Lavoie, Doug Ashby, Brent Bogdanski. Donald Taylor. Roger Crow; Fire Fighter Specialist Stephen Alexander and Fire Fighters Mark Doliva, Gary Poole, Steve Leavitt and Filberto Real.
