EMERGENCY ONE

Sold 13 specialized vehicles to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), which intends to purchase 27 more in the future. The vehicles are intended for the agency’s clandestine methamphetamine lab interdictions and are equipped with 4 2 4 chasis, emergency eyewash stations, overhead emergency shower systems, and onboard water supplies. Additionally, each vehicle has an onboard diesel generator for fixed and portable lighting equipment, ventilating fans, air-conditioning, and interior and exterior workstations.

E-One also sold four crime scene vehicles to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for its homicide unit. The customized four-wheel-drive vehicles are crime labs on wheels and feature onboard generators, special lighting for extended nighttime operations, and crime scene investigation equipment and evidence storage. Additionally, the units are designed to support a potable water supply.

Qatar, located near the Persian Gulf, purchased 39 Emergency One vehicles through its Ministry of the Interior. The units include 14 Jackrabbits, 20 Wildcats, and five pumpers with foam and dry chemical. The Jackrabbits include a commercial chassis, a 200-gallon water tank, foam reserves, and a rear discharge; the Wildcats feature an International 4900 chassis, left and right discharges, a 500-gallon water tank, and 50-gallon foam reserve; and the fire pumpers include a 1,250-gpm Hale pump, 2,000-gallon water tank with integral 500-gallon foam tank, and dry chemical power extinguishing system. The Jackrabbit and Wildcat units will be distributed to the state’s 24 civil defense fire stations.

Additionally, Qatar’s Ministry of Defense purchased two ARFF trucks and four commercial pumpers. The ARFF units are Titan HPR 6 2 6 vehicles and are equipped with 3,000-gallon water tanks and 400-gallon foam tanks. The pumpers include an International 4900 4 2 4 chassis; seating for six; a 1,500-gpm ATP foam system; an 850-gallon water tank; and a 150-gallon integral foam cell.

PIERCE MANUFACTURING, INC.

Has agreed to market SCHWING AMERICA’s extendable, high-volume fire booms. Under the agreement, Pierce will sell the high-flow articulating water towers for large-scale fire suppression. Pierce apparatus equipped with the Schwing three-section articulating fire booms discharge between 600 and 5,000 gpm with a vertical reach of 90 feet. Pierce’s Husky® foam system will be available with the Schwing aerial booms.

The NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION (NFPA)

Named Christian Dubay fire protection engineer for sprinkler system and fire pump projects. He will serve as staff liaison to NFPA technical committees for automatic sprinkler systems and fire pumps and be responsible for the Automatic Sprinkler Systems Handbook and the Fire Pump Handbook and will continue as staff liaison to the water mist technical committee.

Bruce Mullen was named chief financial officer and senior vice president of the NFPA. He had served as a financial analyst consultant, providing support to mergers and acquisitions to the organization’s Business Group.

The NFPA named Marcelo Olivieri de Lima regional director for Brazil. A founding member of the NFPA’s Latin America chapter, Lima will promote the use and adoption of NFPA codes with industry experts, distributors, and inspectors in Brazil. He will continue to develop the NFPA’s partnership with the Brazilian Association of Risk Managers, which has agreed to translate NFPA standards into Portuguese.

Gary S. Keith was named vice president for building codes and standards/regional operations. He will continue to manage implementation of NFPA 5000 Building CodeTM, a consensus-based building code developed for use throughout the United States and internationally.

The NFPA announced the winners of the Fire Prevention Week 2000 “Great Escape Contest.” They are Roderick Vasquez, a third-grader from Petersburg, Alaska, who won in the general public category; and Charles Huntley, a second-grader from New Minas, Nova Scotia, Canada, whose father is a local firefighter. The winners will each receive a grand prize vacation at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The school and local fire department of each winner will receive a set of the NFPA’s Risk Watch® comprehensive injury prevention curriculum.

Named Steven Blackburn domestic emergency product manager, responsible for defining and driving the company’s emergency product line in the U.S. EMS market.

The AMERICAN FIRE SPRINKLER ASSOCIATION

Awarded D.R. Horton, Inc. the “Fire Sprinklers Save Lives” Award. The award is given to individuals or companies outside the fire sprinkler industry that demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the life-saving capabilities of automatic fire sprinklers D.R. Horton, one of the nation’s largest homebuilders, agreed to install residential fire sprinklers in its “Show Village” house at the International Builders Show in Atlanta, Georgia, in February.

DRAEGER SAFETY, INC. and the NATIONAL BURN VICTIM FOUNDATION (NBVF)

Are working together to help thousands of people worldwide obtain medical treatment for burn survivors and their families through a new ad campaign.

The NBVF provides referrals and contacts to medical and legal specialists, burn prevention programs, and an endowment fund for burn care education. The new ad features a $100 donation to the NBVF on behalf of every fire department that demonstrates Draeger’s latest product, the FireOptic thermal imaging camera, which enables firefighters to see possible victims through thick smoke and steam. The ad campaign is expected to run throughout the 2001 calendar year.

CRAIG ABERBACH, a lieutenant with the Cape Coral (FL) Fire Department, received the 2000 Florida Fire Instructor of the Year Award from the Florida Society of Fire Service Instructors. He was recognized for his involvement in the development and delivery of fire service courses and programs.
