Roxbury Chemical Engine Co. No. 1


of Succasunna, New Jersey, placed in service two apparatus to fulfill its specialized needs. The first is an AMERICAN LAFRANCE quint that replaced a 50-foot telescopic waterway and complements a platform aerial device. Chief Louis R. Moore says that the older vehicle had low rails on the ladder while this unit’s aerial ladder has high rails and a longer reach for better versatility. With a shorter wheelbase than the former unit, it can maneuver more easily around the mostly residential district.

Saulsbury


The second vehicle is a SAULSBURY air supply/communications truck.

The company has a rescue/pumper used mostly for extrications; another fire company in the township has a heavy rescue. This new vehicle provides fireground support instead of rescue service. The 18-square-mile township has a population of 23,800 that increases to 100,000 during business hours.

The Mountain View (CO) Fire Protection District


replaced four aging pumpers with four SMEAL rescue-style pumpers. Paramedic Lieutenant Phil Beehler says this style body was selected to increase equipment space. Extrications are common in the district, and the unit has a rear compartment with a rollup door and slide-out tray for quick rescue tool deployment. The apparatus carries foam for use in rural areas and at highway incidents. The 225-square-mile district is 25 miles north of metropolitan Denver along the front range of the Rocky Mountains and has a population of 40,000. It is rapidly changing from rural/suburban to urban/suburban.

The Cora (WV) Volunteer Fire Department


purchased its KME pumper as an addition to its fleet to satisfy pumping capacity requirements for the Insurance Services Office (ISO). Chief George G. Hill explains that the pumper responds to all structure fires and transports additional personnel when warranted for other calls. The jurisdiction occupies 25 square miles and has a population of 10,000.

The Wheatland (WY) Fire Department


decided to carry water on this SVI TRUCKS, INC. medium-duty rescue unit to fight vehicle fires, Chief Scott Scheller explains. The department protects Interstate 25 and provides mutual aid to surrounding towns. The department covers 1,215 square miles, including the town of Wheatland and Platte County Fire District 1F. The population is 3,271.

The Nyack (NY) Fire Department


placed in service this SEAGRAVE tractor-drawn aerial ladder truck at the Empire Hook and Ladder Company No. 1 in Upper Nyack. The department protects three villages in an eight-square-mile jurisdiction with 15,000 residents. There are two marinas and a business district. Captain James Weck explains that the urban/suburban town has many narrow streets, warranting a tiller. The unit is housed alone and has a small pump to provide self-sufficiency.
