  • The Boulder (CO) Emergency Squad supports 29 fire departments on technical rescues and advanced extrications, according to Operations Captain Greg Spencer. The squad has placed in service SVI TRUCKS, INC. light- and medium-duty rescue trucks and a dive unit. The rescue trucks respond to vehicle extrication, rope rescue, and rigging calls (mostly urban) and other technical rescues; the light-duty unit has off-road capabilities and responds to mountain districts with tight access.


Features/Equipment (Light-Duty Rescue):

FORD F-550 chassis with 160-inch wheelbase and cab seating for two;

FORD Power Stroke diesel engine with FORD automatic transmission;

four-wheel drive;

12-foot nonwalk-in body with ROBINSON roll-up compartment doors;

two RAMSEY winches (one six-ton front-mounted and one 21/2-ton portable with two vertical receivers on each side and one at rear);

TNT rescue tools;

6,000-psi air cylinder with low-pressure reel for air tool operations; and

light and power with AURAGEN 8.5-kw belt-driven generator, SUPERVAC three-kw Knight Light Tower, two rear FRC tripod floodlights, and HANNAY electric cord reel.

  • The medium-duty rescue truck is designed with a short wheelbase and tight cramp angle to navigate mountain roads and city streets and has space to carry additional equipment.

HME 1871 SFO chassis with 160-inch wheelbase and five-seat cab;

CUMMINS ISC 330-hp diesel engine with ALLISON MD 3066 automatic transmission;

16-foot nonwalk-in body with ROBINSON roll-up compartment doors and CAREFREE OF COLORADO Spirit FX awning;

two RAMSEY winches (one six-ton front-mounted; one 21/2-ton portable with two horizontal side receivers on each side and one at rear);

six 6,000-psi cylinder air cascade system with AMERICAN AIRWORKS two-hole fill station;

TNT rescue tools with four HANNAY hydraulic reels;

ONSPOT ice chains; and

light and power with ONAN 20-kw PTO generator, SUPER VAC nine-kw Command Lite, two FRC rear tripod floodlights, two FRC fixed scene lights on side of body, six WHELEN 810 fixed scene lights on body, and two HANNAY electric cord reels.

  • The dive unit supports response to swiftwater, dive, and ice rescues in canyon rivers, reservoirs, and different types of ponds.

FREIGHTLINER MT 45 chassis with 192-inch wheelbase and two-seats in cab;

CUMMINS ISB 205-hp diesel engine with ALLISON 1000 automatic transmission;

three-person bench seat in rear and equipment for eight divers;

spare SCUBA tank and STOKES basket storage;

storage module for HAMMERHEADS boogie boards; and

light and power with AURAGEN five-kw belt-driven generator, three FRC fixed scene lights (one on each side and one at rear), and six WHELEN Model 810 fixed scene lights on body.

  • The Guthrie (OK) Fire Department designed its EMERGENCY ONE pumper as a dual-purpose water supply unit, according to Chief Rodney Davison. It can serve as a tanker or as a supply unit from a hydrant in the jurisdiction, which is 75-percent urban.

PETERBILT 330 chassis with 246-inch wheelbase and five-seat cab;

CUMMINS ISC 330-hp diesel engine with ALLISON MD 3060P automatic transmission;

HALE QSG single-stage, 1,250-gpm top-mount pump with 11/2-inch front bumper jump line, two 11/2-inch crosslays, one 21/2-inch rear preconnect, and ELKHART Stinger deck gun;

E-ONE 1,000-gallon water tank; and

two FEDERAL Nightfighter spot/floodlights.

  • The City of Charlotte (NC) Fire Department has in service several SMEAL pumpers and quints. Captain Buddy Caldwell says that the pumpers have rear preconnects instead of crosslays for easier apparatus spotting and pump operator safety. The units also carry 40-foot extension ladders to access the many three- to four-story apartments, where aerials cannot get in.

WATEROUS CMUYCX two-stage, 1,500-gpm pump (one unit has 2,000-gpm pump) with FEECON APH 1.5 foam system with pickup tube, 13/4-inch front bumper line, two 13/4-inch and two 21/2-inch rear preconnects, and AKRON Apollo monitor;

UPF 500-gallon water (two units have 750-gallon) and 30-gallon foam tanks;

ROBINSON roll-up compartment doors;

six sleeves for spare SCBA cylinders;

SMEAL dual hydraulic ladder racks with hard suction hose and 84 feet of ladders; and

light and power with ONAN 10-kw hydraulic generators, WHELEN fixed scene lights on cab, two FRC tripod floodlights, and two HANNAY electric cord reels.

  • The ladder trucks are quints and respond as ladders to structural fire, Captain Caldwell explains. The units can double as engines for other types of calls when the pumper with which they are housed is unavailable. They are also equipped with 40-foot ground ladders.

storage for eight spare SCBA cylinders;

two hydraulic reels powered by an electric simo pump (one reel in front bumper with spreader; the other in right compartment with cutter);

swiftwater and high-angle rescue equipment; and

light and power with ONAN 15-kw PTO generator, three FRC nontelescoping floodlights (one on side and one on rear), two FRC floodlights on ladder tip, and three HANNAY electric cord reels (one in extended front bumper).

  • The East Carnegie Volunteer Fire Department in Carnegie, Pennsylvania, designed its KME pumper with a short wheelbase to negotiate narrow streets and a raised roof cab so that members can stand before exiting the apparatus, according to Chief Jim Mykita.
