USFA Presents Report on Firefighter Operations for 2011 Southeast Tornados

In a new report, Dr. Cortez Lawrence of the United States Fire Administration (USFA) provides insight into the challenges and needs of local fire and EMS agencies as they responded to the April 2011 tornados in the southeastern United States.

On April 27th 2011, 336 lives were lost when the southeastern United States experienced a series of tornados and related events from Mississippi to Tennessee. Alabama and Georgia were hit particularly hard. At least five of these tornados were rated at EF5 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale and if laid end to end, the tornado tracks in this region would have stretched across the contiguous United States.

In the aftermath of this disaster, Deputy U.S. Fire Administrator Glenn Gaines directed the USFA team to assemble pertinent data and documentation to determine how firefighters performed in these events as well as to assist in preparing for future disasters.
