Safety Chart

The Dallas Fire Department is releasing a colorful growth chart emphasizing fire safety tips for children. The chart features a red-tipped match as the measuring stick for a child’s height development up to five feet. A line at the top allows a child to individualize the chart with his name. Animal characters along the match “speak” fire safety reminders, and the bottom line reminds children of the emergency number to dial in case of fire.

Transportable Microcomputer

Emergency Data Systems (EDS) manufactures the System 10 Microstation (sm), the first fully transportable microcomputer workstation specifically designed to meet the speed, reliability, and emergency data requirements of small and medium-sized departments. The System 10 harnesses a powerful microcomputer with 10 megabytes of data storage capacity to a full-featured, 1,200 baud modem and a battery pack. The modem allows the microcomputer to connect in the phone system and access any of the large, national data services such as the National Library of Medicine or the Chemical Information System (CIS).

The battery pack allows the entire system to operate during power outages and electrical storms as well as from a vehicle at the scene of an incident. The System 10 Microstation is built into a single, rugged transport case to protect it from dust, debris, and vibration.

Fire-Resistant Fabric

A complete new line of Panotex and Panotex-blend flame-proof fabrics, distributed by the AntiFlash Corp. offers industry a new dimension in protection against chemicals, molten steel, intense heat and flame.

During testing, when exposed to temperatures of 1,650°F for five minutes, and 932°F for a full four hours, Panotex would not char, sustain a flame, soften, melt, drip, or combust.

According to the manufacturer, the fabric (a combination of the latest carbon fiber technology and extensive textile manufacturing experience) did a far superior job of protection than conventional Aramid fibers, which, at 1,650°F tend to plasticize and degrade in seconds.

Smoke Ejector Carrier

Ziamatic Corp. produces the Blatt Pac, a spring-loaded backpack-type carrier which enables firefighters to transport smoke ejectors on their backs without strain. Durable nylon straps and quick-adjusting buckles distribute the weight of the smoke ejector evenly and position the unit comfortably on the firefighter’s back.

Two spring-loaded arms hold the ejector firmly in place between the foot supports of the frame and the movable hand grips. Handles fit snugly over the top frame of any square-style smoke ejector. The Blatt Pac is made of high tensile strength aluminum and holds 16 or 18-inch smoke ejectors and can be converted to transport 12-inch ejectors by adding alternate tubes. It measures 20 1/2 inches high by 14 1/2 inches wide by 3 1/2 inches deep.
