Fairfax, VA – The application period for the Assistance to Firefighters grant program is now open. The IAFC encourages members to apply for these grants and is offering resources to help members prepare their applications.
The IAFC has posted a slide presentation at www.iafc.org to walk applicants through the process. The presentation includes requirements for applicants, important deadlines, links to application materials and tips on the application process.

About the FIRE Act grant program
The program is administered by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office for Domestic Preparedness. The application period closes April 2. The program will award $750 million in grants directly to fire departments to enhance their abilities with respect to fire and fire-related hazards.
When the official announcement appears in the Federal Register, the IAFC will bring it to your attention immediately.
The grants may be used for programs such as:
- communications equipment such as 800 MHz trunk radio systems, pagers, secondary or parallel systems, and portable radios
- training (emergency preparedness as well as training for fitness, wellness and fire inspector certifications)
- firefighting equipment
- personal protective equipment
- fire prevention education and awareness activities
- fire code enforcement activities
- fire suppression systems
- fire-based EMS equipment and training.
New to the 2004 application is the requirement that each applicant have a Dun & Bradstreet Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) number. Organizations should verify that they have a DUNS number or take the steps necessary to obtain one as soon as possible. Applicants can receive a DUNS number at no cost by calling the dedicated toll-free DUNS number request line at 866-705-5711.
