National Fallen Firefighters Foundation awards scholarships
The daughters of two fallen firefighters, one from Florida and one from Maryland, were recipients of National Fallen Firefighters Foundation 1998-1999 Paul S. Sarbanes Scholarships.
Recipient Deborah Chambers of Glen Burnie, Maryland, daughter of William Chambers, Jr., an Anne Arundel County firefighter who died in the line of duty in 1996, will pursue a degree in mathematics and education at Anne Arundel Community College. She plans to be a high school guidance counselor. She is an active member of the Orchard Beach Volunteer Fire Department and a volunteer tutor in the Glen Burnie High School math department.
Amber Drews of Fort Myers, Florida, the daughter of Chief Karl Drews, a San Carlos Park Fire Department firefighter who died in the line of duty in 1990, will pursue a degree in veterinary medicine at the Royal Veterinary College at the University of London. She served in the U.S. Navy for four years and attended the University of Florida, where she received a degree in animal biology. She is a volunteer for the Animal Care Trust, which provides veterinary care to animals of the poor and indigent.
The Foundation scholarship program was established in 1996. Sarbanes led the effort to designate the Fallen Firefighters Monument in Emmitsburg, Maryland, as the official national memorial to career and volunteer firefighters who died in the line of duty.
