A new 1,500-gallon high mobility aircraft crash/fire/rescue truck has been introduced by Oshkosh Truck Corporation, Oshkosh, Wl, and Konrad Rosenbauer Kg., Linz, Austria. The eight-wheel drive Oshkosh model DA-1500 chassis with a Rosenbauer fire system has an articulation joint which hinges the front and rear sections of the vehicle to provide off-runway mobility and a “duck-walk” action in soft terrain with the front tandem axle continuously seeking firmer ground to maintain the vehicle’s forward momentum.

Hydraulic cylinders attached to each side of the articulation joint yaw steer the vehicle 32° both right and left, giving a 30% tighter turning radius.

The Oshkosh DA-1500 is powered by a Detroit Diesel 540-hp engine coupled to an Allison four-speed automatic transmission, providing an acceleration of 0-50 mph in 40 seconds.

The vehicle’s firefighting system includes a special epoxy coated steel alloy water tank and a stainless steel foam concentrate tank. The proportioning system is an around-thepump type with a twin impeller single-stage centrifugal pump powered by a Detroit Diesel 300-hp engine. The non-aspirating roof turret is a remote power assist type with discharge rates of either 375 or 750 gpm. The norvaspirating, automatic oscillating bumper turret is a remote power assist type with a discharge rate of 250 gpm.
