Firefighters from multiple communities responded to a fire that ravaged a 22-unit apartment building in the village of Oak Park, Illinois, adjacent to the west side of Chicago.
The Chicago Tribune reported that the roof collapsed, and much of the top floor of the structure was gutted. One firefighter was transported to an area hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries, and no residents were hurt, according to Oak Park Battalion Chief Donald Bush.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported that arriving crews encountered heavy flames in the rear of the building, stretching from the ground to the roof, according to Oak Park Fire Department Deputy Chief Peter Pilafas. Dozens of people were displaced, and a two-flat building to the east of the apartment complex may have also suffered damage because of the fire.
