The 1986-1987 Catalog of American National Standards for Safety and Health has been published by the American National Standards Institute. The new edition lists more than 1,000 national consensus standards, which provide authoritative guidance on industrial safety and protection of the individual. Environmental Information Ltd. has released its 1987 edition of INDUSTRIAL AND HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT FIRMS as well as a new publication, SPILL RESPONSE DIRECTORY

The national directory of INDUSTRIAL AND HAZARDOUS WASTE FIRMS contains special sections that provide information on spill response firms, drum reconditioners, mobile treatment firms, and indexes that facilitate rapid identification of other special services that might be needed to respond to an unexpected problem.

The new SPILL RESPONSE DIRECTORY provides information on the services of over 200 spill response/cleanup firms in 48 states. The directory also includes a description of the scope of services offered by the company, type of spilled substances to which the company is prepared to respond, available vehicles and equipment, EPA level of personal protection, company background and service area.

Transportation Rescue Consultants and American Safety Video Publishers put out an extrication training program, The Principles of Extrication, and Techniques of Extrication. Videotapes, aided by instructors’ guides and student manuals, combine actual rescue footage with hands-on demonstrations.

Principles focuses on philosophy and builds a foundation of knowledge including the team approach, initial scene surveys, the anatomy of an automobile, and more. Techniques builds on the first program and includes critiques of actual rescues in progress and demonstrations of vehicle stabilization, patient access, methods of removing glass, displacement of doors/ steering columns, flapping the roof, dash roll-ups, and more.

The M.A.P.S. (mapping accidents for planning and simulation) method simulationsdesigned to enable participants to retain important and useful principles throughout a hazardous materials training exercise is available in limited number through the International Association of Fire Chiefs Foundation. This program, designed by Ludwig Benner, Jr., and Michael S. Hildebrand, demands reasoned thinking on the part of all participants at all levels, levels which are constantly encountered during a real emergency.

Public Service Computer Software Inc. offers free literature and demonstration diskettes for the FireSoft series of fire service software systems. The series includes the preplan system, which is said to facilitate up-to-date preplan entry, editing, retrieval, and printing. The incident reporting system features a HELP function that allows users to enter proper NFPA 901 codes without the need for use of the NFPA manual. Also included in the series are the building inspection system, exam system, equipment management system, and more.
