The Western Taney County Fire Protection District


In Branson, Missouri, uses its CENTRAL STATES rescue pumper as a first-out unit in the northern part of the district and as a covering unit when the regular rescue unit is not available, according to Chief Gary Dreyer. The rear suction is used with the folding tanks so that tankers with side dumps can pass the vehicle after supplying water. The rural/suburban district occupies 200 square miles, has 18,000 residents, and includes U.S. Route 65 and Missouri Route 76.

The Union Township Fire Department


In West Chester, Ohio, has an EMERGENCY ONE Street Warrior medium-duty ambulance with a chassis specified to provide longer service life. According to EMS Captain Richard Santel, the department serves a 34-square-mile township with a population of 49,500. Interstate 75 passes through the district.

The Topeka (IN) Volunteer Fire Department


Operates an AMERICAN FIRE & RESCUE step-van conversion as a rescue unit and an equipment truck. Chief Steve Wainscott explains the department needed to replace (on a limited budget) a pumper and a rescue/equipment truck that carried several turnouts and a lot of loose equipment. The step-van design was the best solution for carrying turnouts, given the funds available. The department protects 72 square miles that includes Topeka, two townships, and a population of 3,000.

The North Boston (NY) Fire Department


Has in service this AMERICAN LAFRANCE rescue truck built at the company’s Hamburg, New York, facility (formerly R.D. Murray Fire Apparatus). Assistant Chief Sean P. Crotty says that the vehicle was designed with adequate lighting and power and sized to fit into the station. The department serves a primarily rural area with single-family dwellings, some apartment houses, farms, and light industry. The jurisdiction has several major roads, including U.S. Route 219, which has its share of auto accidents and vehicle fires. The area protected is 12 square miles and includes a population of 4,000.

The Rattlesnake Fire Protection District


In Parker, Colorado, protects a 66-square-mile, nonhydranted area that has gravel and dirt roads. Assistant Chief Dale Goetz says the district’s three W.S. DARLEY pumper/tankers were designed with large tanks and all-wheel drive to address these considerations. Since most calls are medical-related and many involve auto accidents, abundant lighting was also included. A small kitchen is designed into the cabs for rehab since the department spends many hours at most structure fires. The pump panels are user-friendly for all operators. The district protects a population of 6,500.

    Spokane County Fire District 9 in Mead, Washington


    Operates eight stations and protects 130 square miles of suburban area north of the city of Spokane. According to Chief Robert Anderson, this PIERCE pumper, assigned to Station 91, operates as an ALS engine. It’s designed to carry ALS and extrication equipment to support rescue operations, particularly on U.S. Routes 2 and 395. The district protects 40,000 residents.
