This special section of Fire Engineering briefly reviews current, free literature concerning their products that manufacurers offer to the fire service. Literature is organized under product categories and each entry is keyed to the reader service card which closes the section. For a copy of any literature described, simply circle the number of the item on the card, fill in your name and title, and drop the card in the mail.

Arson Investigative Aids

Grace Industries, Inc. offers literature on its arson investigative kits and its newest tool, the Hydrocarbon Analyzer. Included in these kits are the “Electronic Nose” hydrocarbon detectors that are callable of detecting accelerants days after a fire has occurred. The detectors employ patented microcircuitry systems specifically designed for arson investigation and gas detection. The new Model 400 Hydrocarbon Analyzer has a meter indicator readout and environmental factors, such as wind, rain, humidity and temperature do not affect its use.

Breathing Apparatus

Haskel Engineering & Supply Co. offers a catalog that describes and illustrates two booster model selections designed to provide breathing air support for fire and safety related equipment. The two models provide for rapid fill capability up to 4,500 pounds per square inch—for self-contained breathing units. The model selection is based on the user’s source of breathing air, either an existing three or four-stage mechanical compressor, or air purchased in nominal 2,400 psi cylinders. An alternate model is offered if the purchased gas is pure oxygen, such as is used with rebreather type units, medical cylinders, and flight bottles.

Extinguishing Agents and Systems

Fire Research Corporation offers literature on two available types of foam equipment. The Round the Pump eductor system will control concentrate flows from 3 to 20 gpm. Special systems are available for over 100 gpm of concentrate. This system will work against positive incoming pressures at up to 80 psi on the intake side. Foam can be simultaneously used on one, two, or up to eight lines, or a deck gun if desired.

The second system, the positive displacement pump, can be used to inject chemicals at a low to medium rate into a fire fighting system. It will pump from 1 to 10 gpm of concentrate and will also pump against the positive incoming pressure of up to 50 psi on the intake side of the pump.

In both systems, a 6-inch bell sounds any-time the system fails to meet the dialed-ir percentage.

Sico Inc. offers literature on its folding wall beds that are available complete with cabinet enclosures that include matching closet and/or locker sections. These cabinet components, when, the beds are folded into their recesses, provide an orderly and attractive room area suitable for public use such as CPR instructions, lectures and a variety of other public service functions. Flow Meters

Fire Research Corporation offers literature on several of their flow meters. The portable flow and pressure meter is designed for testing pump operators and pumpers. The right gage will read pressure from 0 to 250 psi, while the left gage will read the flow from 30 to 2,000 gpm. This portable meter is battery powered.

The gage flow meter is a simple sensor with a gage readout that eliminates all hydraulic calculations. The gages are available in flow ranges up to 2,000 gpm or 2,000 liters per minute. They can operate in either U.S. or imperial gallons. Vibration and water resistant gages are damped to give a steady reading.

The digital flowmeter can be read from up to 30 feet away, day or night, due to the high contrast and large numbers. It is a water resistant and temperature stable device, and the direct reading is given with maximum stability on any water flow line.

The auto scan digital flowmeter automatically scans up to eight discharges, displaying only those lines that are flowing water. This flow meter has three modes of operation: automatic, manual, or individual. Total flow computers add all flows and displays. An accumulator setting adds all the flows throughout the duration of the fire.

Gas Detectors

Kohler Co., Generator Division, offers a brochure entitled, “Kohler Portable Generator Sets,” that describes its full line of portable generators from 1.75 kw to 5kw. Kohler XL Series portables are extra light-weight featuring lightweight Briggs & Scratton air-cooled engines. Heavy-duty Kohler HD Series portables feature cast iron engines.

The XL and HD Series include: 1,750, 3,500 and 5,000 watt models. The XL Series also offers a 2,250 watt generator. The portable generators—offering either 120 or 120/140 volt, 50 or 60 hertz—are designed with duplex and twist-lock receptacles as standard equipment. Lights, Lighting

Fire Research Corp. offers literature on their lighting towers. Three models are available: Three section light pole, which is a telescoping pole, weighing less than 40 pounds; One section light pole which can clamp on to the truck, is not telescoping, and weighs 20 pounds; a tripod, for mounting away from the truck. All towers are sold separately or with their quartz lights, at an additional cost.

Literature is also available on their 500 watt quartz light. This light operates from 115v and has a 25-foot retractile power cable. Two models are available: one specifically for the lighting tower or as a portable light and the other model has a short cord, and can be used on the fireground or on the apparatus.

Koehler Manufacturing Co. offers two catalogs describing their lighting products. The CS-1 catalog covers rechargeable portable hand lights and cap lights which save 90 percent of dry cell battery costs. They may be charged from 12 volt vehicle mounted chargers or 120 volt chargers.

The CS-20 catalog features heavy duty 6-volt dry cell Commando All-American Half Miler Hand Lanterns. Both the rechargeable lights and the 6-volt dry cell hand lanterns feature the heavy duty stainless steel construction, shockproof leather handles, and adjustable focuses. Nozzles and Fittings

Akron Brass Company has literature available on its Akromatic, the lightweight Pyrolite fog nozzle with an automatic mechanism that reacts to the volume of water supplied, designed to discharge water under controlled conditions from 60-40 gpm at good operating pressure. JMD Electronics has literature available on the model TP Pager which can be used with most fire department alerting systems. The pager remains silent until it receives the proper alerting tone. It will then activate and allow the user to hear a message before it automatically resets or it can be reset manually. It has adjustable on-off volume control and is available with up to 3 different single tones or 2 different dual tones allowing it to respond to more than one call such as a general and rescue. It measures approximately 4 3/8-inches high, 2 3/8-inches wide and 1-inch deep.

Fire Research Corp. offers literature on the following: the rapid system, a small positive displacement pump that pumps in the additive at the correct rate to insure friction reduction in a hose line and includes a five-gallon tank and two separate flowmeters; the radio controlled automatic pumper, designed to give the nozzleman radio control over his own nozzle pressure and flow rate; the automatic electro governor system, a control unit that regulates pump pressure from 0 to 300 psi. This system is available in two models: front mount, designed to be mounted on any front mount or compartment pump and the panel mount, which can be mounted anywhere on the vehicle. The operator dials in the required output pressure and the pump will operate at this pressure within seconds and hold the pressure regardless of flow changes. The engine idles if the pump runs out of water. Remote control wire or radio are available. Literature is also available on the electro pump pressure computer. This panel mounted computer will allow the pump operator to determine the output pressure required for a hose line. The computer requires 11-inches x 7-inches of panel space and operates on 12 volts DC.

Berkeley Pump Company offers literature describing their centrifugal fire fighting pumps that are engine-driven for mobile mounting, with nozzle pressures to 950 psi and capacities to 300 gpm, in Bulletin PRC 707-20.

All four models are direct driven by aircooled engines, and equipped with 12-volt starters. They are lightweight, and are designed to fit into high speed pick-ups or trucks with limited water storage. The 10 and 18 hp units have discharge rates up to 110 gpm and up to 300 psi. The other two direct driven units are rated as 30 hp. One has discharge pressures up to 250 psi and capacities to 250 gpm. The other, a single stage centrifugal, offers discharge pressure up to 160 psi and flow rates to 300 gpm.

W.S. Darley & Co. offers a bulletin describing the new JMP two-stage centrifugal, series-parallel booster pump, which is PTO driven. It has a capacity up to 375 gpm and 150 psi, and pressure up to 800 psi at 40 gpm. The pump weighs 250 pounds. Literature is also available describing the engineering and design exclusive to the Darley line of Champion Fire Pumps: Midship Pumps (capacities 500 to 1500 gpm), Power Take-Off Driven Pumps Front Mount Pumps, Skid Mount Pumps, Portable Pumps, all with a lifetime pump guarantee. Safety Products

Fire Research Corp. offers literature on their Skull Saver, a protective device attached to the end of ladders that protrude. It is held on by straps and has a velcro fastener, which makes it easy to remove. The bright yellow unit will cushion any blow against the end of the ladder, and it is available in standard, super, super duper, and custom sizes, depending on particular needs. A “Keep Back” warning sign has been added, which is visible for over 100 feet.

Literature is also available on the ManSaver, a safety bar that mounts across the jump seat opening. It is completely automatic, and is spring loaded to return to a safe position at all times.

Simulation Equipment

Fire Research Corp. offers literature on their simulation systems. Pump simulators include all standard pumper features, and all major pump manufacturers are represented. Various models include portable, multiple portable, console, multiple console, 1/3 multiple console and 2/3 multiple console. Tactics simulators are completely automated three-dimensional layouts of any area subject to fire hazards. Three sizes are available: standard tactics system, which measures 10 feet x 16 feet and contains one platform unit, three radio units and six modules; portable tactics system which measure 7 feet x 6 feet and folded, 3 feet x 6 feet; mini tactics system, which is a table top version. The portable radio simulator enables up to four operators to simultaneously practice the skill needed for proper operation of a mobile radio network. It has two separate channels. The instructor can transmit on either frequency, adjust volumes of frequencies, interference and background noise, and record and monitor channels. Students wear headphones, maintain volume, squelch levels and frequencies and respond to transmission with a hand-held palm unit. This portable radio simulator comes in a trunk and weighs 75 pounds.

Fire Research Corp. offers literature on their pump mock-up, used for teaching basic fire pump operational theory. The pump can be built, piece by piece, by the instructor, and the system can be changed from single stage to a two-stage pump easily. Literature is also available on their smokehouse and rescue dummy. Each dummy has a seven piece body with free movement of the head, arms, legs, upper and lower torsos. It is made of heavy-duty nylon and is supplied with heavy denim outer garments. Adult and child sizes are available, and the weights vary accordingly.

Warning Lights

Fire Research Corp. offers literature on their apparatus warning system. Integrated circuitry receives signals from all critical functions of the vehicle such as oil pressure, generator, temperature, etc., and flashes the appropriate light on the operator’s monitor. In addition to the visual warning, an 8-inch bell will ring for approximately one second on and one second off as long as the failure lasts.

Olympics Aided by Akron

The Akron Brass Company supported the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid through the loan of fire fighting equipment to the local fire department. Products supplied included Turbojet, Marauder and Akromatic nozzles; Swingout leader line and hydrant valves; UHX foam, foam nozzles and eductors; and the Akron ladder pipe, as well as assorted adapters and wrenches.
