MS Firefighters Rescue Girls Allegedly Left Home Alone

Firefighters rescued two young girls from a house fire Tuesday in Biloxi, Mississippi. The girls had allegedly been left at home alone by their mother, who reportedly returned from a shopping trip to find the house destroyed by fire. She was placed under arrest for felony child neglect.

Firefighters pulled the girls from the home and performed CPR on them in the front yard, according to a Sun Herald report (http://bit.ly/ylXpt1). The girls, aged 3 and 5, were breathing on their own before they were transported by an ambulance to an area hospital.

A man who also lived in the multi-family home suffered cuts on his hands and legs after breaking the front window to escape the fire. A firefighter suffered minor burns to his neck and wrist.

Firefighters Chris Denton and Andy Cosper had to search through the smoke by feel to locate the victims.

Because the residents of the home spoke Spanish and little English, having Spanish-speaking firefighters and police officers on hand helped communicate the children’s plight to rescuers, according to Fire Chief David Roberts.
