Glow-in-the-dark guides

Glow-in-the-dark dots and arrows from Seton Name Plate Corp. provide a glowing pathway to guide personnel out of buildings safely and quickly. These 2 1/2inch diameter, slip-resistant, vinyl markers emit a green glow in the darkness, which will last for hours.

The markers can be recharged by exposing them to light for a few minutes. They have pressure-sensitive backing for easy application.

Hearing protectors

North Health Care, a division of Siebe North Inc., anounces the availability of Corded DeciDamp hearing protectors, which have a noise-reduction rating of 35 db. While they have superior attenuation above 1,000 Hz, they also reduce noise at lower frequencies, making voice communication more audible.

Bunker boot

The new Ranger Firemaster boot, available from Ranger Rubber Co., is designed to provide firefighters with enhanced traction and stability on roofs, ladders, and other wet, slippery surfaces.

The boots are made of specially formulated rubber and have open sides to help prevent clogging and facilitate cleaning. They also have a Kevlar/Nomex lining that protects against burns.

Hazard communication station displays material safety data sheets

Justrite Manufacturing Co. is offering a display station to facilitate collection and display of the material safety data sheets required by OSHA Standard 29CFR 1910:1200.

The bright red plexiglass boards can be wall-mounted so workers can spot the data sheets at a glance. Pockets at the base of the board can hold the MSDS binder along with a worker log which indicates who has read each of the required sheets.

Emergency pump is constructed to resist acids and alkalies

B.J.M. Corp. introduces The Perfect, which is a 0.4-hp, corrosion-proof, electrical, submersible emergency pump. It weighs 13.5 pounds and is made of Noryl GTX830, which has excellent resistance to acids and alkalies, according to the company. All hardware is made of stainless steel.

The oil-filled motor is protected by two seals. The lower one is made of Viton and the upper one is made of Nitril.

Cooling system

The Ice Chest Cooling Vest, manufactured by Mine Safety Appliances Co., is an effective system for reducing the chance of heat stress, especially in hazardous-materials situations that require workers to wear total-encapsulating suits, which tend to hold body heat. The vest can also protect workers in nuclear plants, oven and molten metal operations, and underground mines. The vest is made from an insulating material that keeps cold in and heat out.

Dry-suit underwear

Viking America Inc. announces the availability of its redesigned underwear for dry-suit diving. The new underwear is still made from 9.6-mm polyester foam and coated with nylon on both sides, but the cut is fuller. This makes the underwear easier to put on and take off.

Multiuse tool

Fire Science Development Corp. introduces the Cobar tool, designed by a career firefighter. The spanner wrench head fits rocker and pin-lug couplings from 1½ inches to 3 inches and 4-inch quick-connect couplings. A pin on the wrench head easily removes door hinge pins.

The wedge point at the bottom pries car trunks, doors, and windows and can be used for chipping ice from hydrants and couplings or for unscrewing caps from gas cylinders and similar containers.

Interlocking barricade units are used to direct pedestrian traffic

“The Boys,” lightweight, interlocking barricade units, shaped like the outline of the human form, are now available from BARCO Products Co. They’re 41 inches high and 31 inches wide, and are molded from high-impact polyethylene.

“The Boys” can be used in office buildings, shopping centers, airports, and other public facilities to direct pedestrian traffic. They’re usually used to block access to revolving doors, elevators, and escalators, and to warn of hazards in construction and industrial areas.

Combustible-gas indicator responds to most flammable-liquid vapors

Bacharach Inc. introduces its supersensitive TLV Sniffer gas indicator that’s designed to respond to parts per million concentrations of most flammable liquid vapors. The TLV Sniffer has a multirange, easy-to-read meter that indicates 0 to 100 ppm, 0 to 1,000 ppm, and 0 to 10,000 ppm; a long-life sensor that resists poisoning by lead or silicones; and an audible alarm that activates when gas concentration exceeds a user-adjustable set point.

This feature allows a user to ask questions and give commands in standard conversational English sentences. The software is designed to run on IBM and IBM-compatible microcomputers.

Improved air regulator

Paratech Inc. is offering its improved Piston Air Regulator for use with all types of air-operated tools. Fire departments and rescue squads may now use air sources with pressures up to 6,000 psi and safely reduce operating pressures to between 0 and 350 psi.

The regulator has an easy-turning, pressure-adjusting knob. The self-resetting relief valve and air-outlet valve are now integral parts of the regulator body.

Two workers were killed and another seriously injured in an explosion Tuesday at a Delta Air Lines maintenance facility near the Atlanta airport.
