  • The Farmington (NM) Fire Department designed its two PIERCE pumpers (one shown here) with high-powered engines to handle steep grades; foam systems were also specified because of a number of gas and oil wells in the district, explains Chief Tom W. Aurnhammer.

The Solon Township (MI) Fire Department designed its EMERGENCY ONE mini-pumper as a “grab and go” type unit, according to Chief Mitch Havens. The vehicle primarily responds to medical calls, extrications, and vehicle fires.

The Stratton (OH) Fire Department designed its W.S. Darley pumper with a short wheelbase and 26-foot overall length to negotiate the streets of the village, according to Chief Ed Gotschall. The pumper is equipped to handle fire and EMS calls.

  • The Salida (CO) Fire Department’s RESCUE 1 rescue truck carries equipment that was once divided among three vehicles, according to Chief Peter DeChant. It responds to all medical calls, MVAs, confined-space and other rescues, haz mat, and structure fires. It has seating for an entire crew and can be used for rehab purposes.

  • The Penn Township Fire Department in Mishawaka, Indiana, designed its ALEXIS pumper so that daytime, paid crews are equipped to answer medical and accident calls in additional to fire alarms. According to Chief John Snyder, the rear pump and panel allow better deployment of hose hookups on narrow roads and driveways; they also permit the operator to assist with other duties while keeping an eye on the pump.

  • The Prince George’s County (MD) Fire/EMS Department placed this SEAGRAVE quint in service to evaluate the performance and versatility of the “quint concept,” explains Chief Spokesperson Mark E. Brady. This apparatus shares quarters with an engine. The department covers a heavily populated urban area.

  • The Hillrose (CO) Fire District protects a rural area in the northeast part of the state that includes dirt roads and U.S. highways in its jurisdiction. Chief Skip Kaiser explains that this SVI TRUCKS rescue unit is designed for maneuverabilty and handling bad weather and is equipped for rescue and haz-mat calls.

  • The Nassau Oaks (FL) Fire Department protects a jurisdiction located 12 miles from a water source. This CRIMSON pumper is designed to operate either as an attack or supply engine and has enclosed storage, which protects equipment from exposure to the weather, according to Chief Dave Pearson.
