Firefighter Training Drill: Safety Officer: Initial Scene Duties

Safety officer initial scene duties

Firefighter training drill by Forest Reeder

Part 3 of our incident safety officer series puts you pulling up on the incident scene getting ready to go to work as the incident safety officer. Once your vehicle is in park, what should you do next?  Obviously you should take care of the PPE part of the process, but after that, have you developed a standard set of actions to identify, what incident objectives and assignments you will have to complete in your role?

This training drill puts you in a face-to-face meeting with the incident commander (IC) and then to establish an understanding of a number of incident factors. This establishes the relationship of the safety officer to the IC as a member of the command Staff in which the safety officer reports directly to the IC. The safety officer acts as a function of command and acts with the authority and responsibility of the incident commander. Review the set of local application questions to help establish your initial responsibilities.
