Sun City (AZ) Fire Department Orders CustomFIRE Pumper from RedSky

RedSky Fire Apparatus, a fire apparatus and ambulance dealer serving Arizona, southern Nevada, and New Mexico, announces that Sun City (AZ) Fire Department has purchased a new 1500-gpm, stainless steel pumper from Custom Fire Apparatus, Inc. of Osceola, Wisconsin. The department placed the order in January 2012, and delivery is scheduled for June 2012.

“We were looking for a pumper with significant firefighting capability and compartmentation, combined with a roomy cab, great visibility, and excellent maneuverability. Custom Fire was able to work with us to package this in a compact design with a short wheelbase and overall length,” explained Chief James Haner, Sun City Fire Department.

“We are very pleased to have earned this order from Sun City. They are a busy, urban department with a demanding response profile and a progressive view on firefighting with foam. This CustomFIRE urban pumper was optimized to meet all their performance needs, including a compact wheelbase, 500-gallon water capacity, twostage pump, FoamPro 3012/200 cfm CAFS, and lifetime warranty on the stainless steel body for a very reasonable investment,” said Jim Featherstone, RedSky president.

Continued Featherstone, “Thanks to Chief Haner, Battalion Chief Mike Thompson, and the Sun City Fire Board for their confidence in RedSky and Custom Fire.”

The stainless steel CustomFIRE side-mount pumper features 500-gallon water capacity, two-stage Waterous CMU 1500-gpm pump, FoamPro 3012/200 cfm CAFS system with six CAFS-capable discharges, two speedlays, remote-control TFT deck gun, and hydraulic ladder rack. This pumper features a lifetime warranty on the body, underbody support structure, and water tank cradle.

The new pumper is built on a Spartan Gladiator EMFD chassis with a 450-hp Cummins ISL engine, Allison EVS 3000 transmission, Telma retarder, 6-person seating with air ride captain’s and forward-facing crew seats, 187-inch wheelbase, 17-inch disc brakes on  both the front and rear, and cramp angles of 48 degrees and 44 degrees to the left and right, respectively.

The warning and lighting package features Whelen LED warning light package, Whelen Freedom light bar, DOT LED lighting package, OptiCom, and Q2B siren.

The pumper will be painted white with a red roof to match Sun City’s existing fleet. Tom Harley, RedSky vice president of sales, is the sales representative.

Founded in 1966, the Sun City Fire District is among the busiest fire departments in the state of Arizona. Located in the northwest corner of the Phoenix metropolitan area, Sun City Fire’s response territory covers all of Sun City, the Town of Youngtown and the Citrus Point community. Since 1990, the department has operated a paramedic program. Firefighters are cross-trained on a variety of functions including EMS, and each Sun City fire apparatus is equipped to provide care for multiple critical patients.
