The Law of Detachment…The Yoga Way!

By Claire Diab and Dennis Boyle

The Principle of Detachment could really be called the “Principle of Freedom.” It embraces the idea of not being rigidly attached to the way you think things should be. It includes not forcing solutions on problems, which can sometimes create new problems and embracing uncertainty as an essential ingredient of life. When we embrace uncertainty, we are open to so many more possibilities and become aware of so many more choices that will lead us to experience the fun, adventure, and mystery of life.

We have all experienced in our lives that we have had a goal, an idea, of where we were going, what we were doing…whether it be a job, a project, a relationship, moving locations, and so on. And then, suddenly, we were led in another direction. Whether it was a good or not-so-good situation that occurred to make the shift. And when we have looked back at the situation, that is when we were able to see that it all happened for a reason. We did not see at that moment; it actually led us to a better relationship, a better job, a better location, a better project, and so on.

One major factor that confuses people in this beautiful Principle of Detachment/Freedom is that being uncertain can be uncomfortable. It doesn’t have to be uncomfortable. You still have your goals, your one-pointed intention and direction. Then, you work toward achieving the goal, knowing in the back of your mind at any time you that could be led in another direction.

This is the Principle of Uncertainty, which will give you more energy, more freedom, more creativity, and an openness that will make your life more rewarding and worthwhile.

To be open to the Principle of Detachment, it is important for your body and mind to be strong and healthy. It is important for us to feel good mentally, emotionally, and physically. When we create space in our bodies with breathing and movement, energy can flow more freely, and we are able to accept and embrace this beautiful Principle of Detachment.

Below is a 45-minute Yoga class video designed for men on Father’s Day, June 16, 2019. I made it easy and user-friendly for everyone.
