The faculty student association of the NEW YORK STATE ACADEMY OF FIRE SCIENCE in Montour Falls, has established the Andrew Fredericks Memorial Resident Scholar’s Chair. The program is designed to encourage fire service education through scholarly research for students while in residence at the academy. Candidates should submit proposals for the following: developing a certain fire service training/education curriculum area; an article or monograph for publication that advances fire service education/training; or any scholarly advancement of fire service education/training. Applications will be evaluated based on the merits of the proposed contribution to advancing fire service education and training. The NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION’s (NFPA) Fire Safety Educational Memorial Fund Committee awarded the Madison (WI) Fire Department hazmat response team the 2008 Warren E. Isman grant. The $5,000 grant will allow the five-member response team to attend the 2008 HOTZONE Conference in Houston, Texas, in October. The grant is available to any established incident response team from a fire department, police department, or other public-funded program. Qualified applicants are evaluated on leadership qualities, communication abilities, and must have been trained in accordance with NFPA 472, Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents, and NFPA 473, Standard for Competencies for EMS Personnel Responding to Hazardous Materials/WMD Incidents. FIREMAN’S FUND INSURANCE COMPANY’s corporate philanthropy program, Fireman’s Fund Heritage®, in 2007 has awarded more than $6.3 million in grants to more than 400 fire departments and fire service organizations to fund needed equipment, training, and community education programs. Thousands of pieces of new equipment and gear were purchased with Fireman’s Fund grants, including thermal imaging cameras, turnout gear, extrication equipment, portable radios, ventilation saws, nozzles, self-contained breathing apparatus sets, and medical defibrillators. Industrial Scientific named Justin McElhattan its president and chief operating officer. In this newly created position, McElhattan will be responsible for integrating and growing the corporation’s worldwide gas monitoring business. Since joining Industrial Scientific in 1998, McElhattan has served as North America sales manager, general manager of service operations, director of global operations, vice president of operations, and most recently, president of Industrial Scientific Americas.
