The faculty student association of the NEW YORK STATE ACADEMY OF FIRE SCIENCE in Montour Falls, has established the Andrew Fredericks Memorial Resident Scholar’s Chair. The program is designed to encourage fire service education through scholarly research for students while in residence at the academy. Candidates should submit proposals for the following: developing a certain fire service training/education curriculum area; an article or monograph for publication that advances fire service education/training; or any scholarly advancement of fire service education/training. The NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION’s (NFPA) Fire Safety Educational Memorial Fund Committee awarded the Madison (WI) Fire Department hazmat response team the 2008 Warren E. Isman grant. The $5,000 grant will allow the five-member response team to attend the 2008 HOTZONE Conference in Houston, Texas, in October. The grant is available to any established incident response team from a fire department, police department, or other public-funded program. Qualified applicants are evaluated on leadership qualities, communication abilities, and must have been trained in accordance with NFPA 472, Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents, and NFPA 473, Standard for Competencies for EMS Personnel Responding to Hazardous Materials/WMD Incidents.
