Colorado Fire Department Adopts New Approach to Firefighter Fitness

The South Metro (CO) Fire District has shifted its approach to firefighter physical fitness after a member nearly died from a heart attack on duty, according to a report.

A report on thedenverchannel.com says firefighter Nick Gravina, 40, appeared in good shape when he had a heart attack after finishing a firefighter fitness test.

In the wake of the incident, South Metro scrapped the standard fitness test, hired a wellness expert, and took a new approach to firefighter fitness, focusing on muscular endurance, muscular strength, mobility and flexibility, aerobic fitness, and body composition. The report said the department initiated new specialized tests for each individual, trying to better prepare the department’s 280 firefighters for the stresses of the job.
