The Seymour Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD) of Seymour, Tennessee, partnered together with Domino’s Pizza and the NFPA to raise awareness for fire safety during Fire Prevention Week.
This was the second annual joint effort for fire safety awareness and education. Random customers are selected for the Seymour Fire Department to accompany Domino’s delivery drivers for home fire alarm inspection. Each delivery selected was accompanied by a engine company.
Upon arrival, the firefighters would complete a system check in the home to ensure all detectors were working properly. If all detectors were functional the order was free. If smoke alarms were found to be in need of batteries or replacement, the fire department repaired the alarm or replaced the batteries.
“Functioning smoke alarms save lives but many people forget to maintain them,” Said Seymour Fire Chief Kevin Nunn. “Families also need to have a fire escape plan and practice it.”
Of all the home visits SVFD completed, 100 percent of the residents had working smoke alarms.
The Seymour Fire Department is an all-volunteer organization covering 98 square miles in three counties from six stations. These stations house a variety of fire apparatus. The SVFD is on pace to exceed 2,000 calls for service in 2014.
