APPARATUS DELIVERIES: The St. John’s, MI Fire Department uses its W.S. DARLEY minipumper

By John M. MaleCKy

The St. John’s (MI) Fire Department uses its W.S. DARLEY minipumper as a first-out engine and attack unit, according to Chief Dick Cornwell. The unit is easier to maneuver and allows a quicker response compared to a full-sized apparatus. The CAFS affords quick fire knockdown with minimal water damage.

Features/Equipment:

  • FORD F-550 XLT Super Duty chassis with 200-inch wheelbase and four-seat cab;
  • INTERNATIONAL 6.0 L 325-hp diesel engine with FORD Torque Shift automatic transmission;
  • DARLEY LSMC single-stage, 1,000-gpm pump with HYPRO Foam Pro 2001 system with 120-cfm rotary screw air compressor and two 1¾-inch crosslays;
  • PROPOLY 315-gallon water and 25-gallon foam tanks;
  • POLYBILT Poly Vision body with ROBINSON roll-up compartment doors; and
  • four FRC floodlights on body.

The Stamford (CT) Fire Department’s HME 109-foot aerial with RK ladder replaced a 75-foot one to cover the industrial South End district, according to Chief Robert McGrath. Since the district includes mixed occupancies and narrow streets, the unit has a tight turning radius and can be straight- and short-jacked in tight areas.

Features/Equipment:

  • HME 1871 chassis with 234-inch wheelbase and six-seat cab;
  • CUMMINS ISL 400-hp diesel engine with ALLISON 3000 EVS automatic transmission;
  • 109-foot ladder with 500- to 2,000-pound tip load, a pinnable waterway, a 16-foot outrigger spread, and an AKRON Stream Master ladderpipe;
  • GORTITE roll-up compartment doors and eight wheel well sleeves for spare SCBA cylinders;
  • HOLMATRO rescue tools; and
  • light and power with ONAN 10-kw hydraulic generator, four FRC floodlights (two on fly section, two midship on body), four HAVIS SHIELDS COLLINS spot/floodlights on aerial (two tip, two midship), and two HANNAY electric cord reels.

The Huntington Valley Volunteer Fire Company in Lower Moreland Township, Pennsylvania, uses this AMERICAN LaFRANCE pumper as a first-out unit. Engineer Tom Glennon says it was designed to provide more storage than the department’s older truck and with a shorter wheelbase for maneuverability.
