RICK LASKY retired from the fire service after 34 years of service, which included serving as chief of the Lewisville (TX) Fire Department for 12 years. He has served as the co-lead instructor for the FDIC H.O.T. Firefighter Survival program for more than 10 years and is an editorial advisory board member for Fire Engineering and a member of the FDIC advisory board.

JOHN J. SALKA JR. served with the Fire Department of New York for more than 33 years; he retired as the commander of his Bronx battalion. He worked engine, ladder, squad, and rescue companies and also instructed at the FDNY Fire Academy. He is the author of three books and instructs nationally on a variety of subjects.
