FDIC Service Award: Susan R. Shepherd

FDIC SERVICE AWARD: SUSAN R. SHEPHERD

Susan R. Shepherd is the recipient of the 2014 FDIC Service Award. The honor is given to local Indianapolis-area personnel who have, over an extended period of time, demonstrated outstanding service to the Fire Department Instructors Conference.

Private Susan Shepherd has been with the Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department since 2000. She is assigned to Engine 24-C Shift. Shepherd is a certified engineer, hazmat technician, and peer fitness trainer. She has chaired the Ray Downey Courage and Valor Fun Run at FDIC since the run’s inception.

Robin Nicoson, deputy chief (Ret.), Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department, says: “Sue is a pleasure to work with because her pleasant and positive attitude makes nearly any work seem fun and interesting. From the beginning, Sue became the leader of the FDIC Fun Run and has handled the position fairly and professionally by making sure every detail was covered and everyone had equal amounts of work they enjoyed. Even in the most stressful times, Sue would continue to point out the positives of her mission. She always took the initiative to make sure her work was done exceptionally well.”

FDIC Education Director Bobby Halton says: “Sue Shepherd has been one of the most contagious and energetic supporters of FDIC and firefighter health and wellness. Sue’s unrelenting passion to improve and support firefighter health and wellness has driven her to almost singlehandedly drive the Courage and Valor 5K Fun Run into one of the most popular and meaningful events at FDIC. Sue is kind and supportive, she is honest and caring, and her integrity and devotion exemplify the highest virtues of the American firefighter.”

Shepherd was presented with the award at the Indianapolis Fire Department Recognition Banquet, January 24, 2014, in the Indiana Roof Ballroom.
