The Main-Transit Fire Department


Amherst, New York, replaced a 1973 pumper with this AMERICAN LAFRANCE, which provides better crew protection and almost double the compartment space, according to Carl Fischer, public information officer and former chief. The department operates out of two stations, covers 5.2 square miles, and protects a population of 15,000. The jurisdiction includes residential and light industrial areas and numerous office buildings. Buffalo Niagara International Airport is at the jurisdiction’s southern border.

The Benton (PA) Fire Department protects a 100-square-mile rural area of 5,000 residents.


Chief Carl Spiece says that this W.S. DARLEY pumper is outfitted as an attack unit and primary rescue engine. Water supplies are sometimes lacking in the outlying area; a compressed air foam system (CAFS) permits quick knockdowns using a minimal amount of water.

The Ventura County (CA) Fire Protection District


According to Captain Bill Breuklander the department uses three LUVERNE Type II pumpers in rural to semirural areas with urban interface.

The district specified commercial chassis, which are lighter and less costly. The district is responsible for 865 square miles with 750,000 inhabitants and provides mutual aid to two military bases and Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties.
