Recipients of NFPA Learn Not to Burnw award selected

The following cities/metropolitan areas–with an aggregate population of more than 11.5 million–have been selected to receive the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1997 Learn Not to Burnw (LNTB) Safe Cities Award: Chicago, IL; Colorado Springs, CO; Jacksonville, FL; Kern and Los Angeles counties, CA; Milwaukee, WI; Philadelphia, PA; Raleigh, NC; Yonkers, NY; and Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Each recipient will receive free NFPA`s Learn Not to Burnw fire safety education materials, technical support to establish or enhance the implementation of the program in local elementary schools and day care centers, and specialized training for a team of program advocates. The team will be headed by a designated program manager from the local fire department (the “Champion”) and will include a representative from the school system and a private sector community partner.

The Safe City Champions and their team members will travel to Boston this month to participate in a special workshop conducted by the NFPA`s fire safety education representatives. During the year, the NFPA Fire Safety Education representative assigned to each recipient location will visit the community to conduct an in-depth teacher-in-service workshop and provide additional on-site assistance.
