All 19 fire stations in Nash County, North Carolina, were running all day long on April 9.

Strong winds were hitting the state with 5 miles per hour reaching 30 miles gusts of wind at times all day long. Many large trees fell across roads. One home was cut in half by a 90-foot tree falling on it, and two house trailers were destroyed by out-of-control brush fires.

A family of five were left homeless from a fast-moving house fire in West Mount. Fire departments from West Mount Station 4, Sharpsburg Station 11, Coopers Station 15, and Nashville Station 14 along with Nash EMS and Sheriff’s Departments responded. Around 5:40 p.m., they were dispatched to 8427 Bend of the River Roard to a working fire in the home. The homeowners and their three children were able to get out of the burning home before firefighters arrived.

More than 50 firefighters battled the fire for more than one and a half hours before they could bring it under control. First-in firefighters made an aggressive interior attack but were forced out because of heavy fire conditions, and part of the roof caved in , forcing them to make an exterior attack using five handlines and one deck gun. Two cars were in the backyard of the house, and one was on fire. Firefighters were able to save one of them. They also saved a large storage building that was also starting to burn. Firefighters had to deal with the high winds, which helped fan the blaze. Crews remained on the scene for extensive overhaul  No injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation by the Nash County fire marshals Chris Bissette and John Frazier.
