Volunteers Put Dispatch Data on Computer

Fitchburg Fire Department Madison, Wis.

Computerized dispatching assistance has been implemented in the Fitchburg Volunteer Fire Department in Madison, Wis.

The decision to invest in a computer for retrieving response information was made after observations indicated that the department would become more efficient. High turnover among volunteer members, combined with a rapidly growing community were problems. Our community is getting more buildings and new streets so frequently that it is difficult to keep all members aware of every change.

An Apple II computer was purchased solely from fund-raising activities for $2800. Among other things, the computer provides: readout of the emergency location, cross-referenced by street number, street and intersection; number, age, sex and physical condition of structure occupants; type of structure and construction; exposures; points of entry; gas and electric shutoffs; hazardous materials storage; and nearest hydrant or other water source.

It takes a dispatcher only 15 seconds to retrieve the desired information after the alarm is received. This information is then relayed by radio to responding officers.

We expect to put a second station in service shortly, and when that is done, we hope to add a printout capability to the system.

All department personnel are involved in gathering information for entry into the computer. This is being accomplished by the distribution of questionnaires; talks to service clubs, fraternal groups and church organizations; open houses at the station during public fire safety education classes; and by door-to-door contact with residents and business people.

The computer concept was introduced to the department after some members attended the Fire Department Instructors Conference and the International Society of Fire Service Instructors conferences. Various tests of computers showed that the system selected would clearly benefit the department.
