Alan V. Brunacini, chief of the Phoenix (Ariz.) Fire Department, is the first active fire service member to be chairman of the National Fire Protection Association’s board of directors.

A board member since 1978, Brunacini is also chairman of the association’s Fire Service Occupational Safety and Health Committee, which was responsible for the development of NFPA 1500.

For more than 20 years, Brunacini has taught fireground command and safety management at workshops and seminars throughout the United States and Canada.

Brunacini and other board officers and members were elected at the association’s annual meeting. Elected to one-year terms as board officers were Warren E. Jackson, consultant, Glastonbury, CT; John P. Swope, M.D., Derwood, MD; Thomas G. Bell, consultant, Kensington, MD; and Frank J. Fee III, president of the Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Co., Mount Vernon, NY.

Five senior fire officials attended Harvard University’s “Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government” this summer.

The five participants in the program were: Rocco J. Gibriele, Maryland State Fire Marshal; Larry Hodge, chief of the Frankfort (Ky.) Fire Department; Joseph G. Mack, deputy chief of the Philadelphia Fire Department; Howard “Larry” McMillen, chief of the Fort Worth (Tex.) Fire Department; and Bill M. Strickland, chief of the Arlington (Tex.) Fire Department. Two alternates were chosen for the program: Littleton, Colo. Fire Director Lee Daugherty and New Brunswick (N.J.) Fire Director James Martin Carman.

William C. Tidball, FEMA’s chief of staff, recently headed a task force formed to study the future role of the agency’s Office of Training.

One of the task force’s assignments was to investigate the use of funds provided to the office from all sources. It was also asked to study the assignment of personnel w’ithin the office.

The task force was scheduled to present its initial recommendations to FEMA Director Julius W. Becton, Jr. by the end of last month. The Office of Training includes the National Fire Academy and the Emergency Management Institute, both located at the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Md.

William Neville, formerly the superintendent of the National Fire Academy, has been named the National Fire Protection Association’s assistant vice president for External Affairs and Public Fire Protection.

At the NFPA, Neville will be responsible for government and external relations, member relations, the NFPA Washington office, and the association’s Public Fire Protection Division.
