Chimney Fire Equipment Carried in Washtub
Chimney fires are extinguished with the use of equipment carried in a galvanized washtub on the first-in pumper of Glenville Hill Fire District 7 in Glenville, N.Y.
In the tub are two pairs of asbestos gloves, a small coal shovel, a Chimfex flare, two coffee cans of ABC dry chemical and a canvas tarpaulin.
The tarp is placed in front of the stove or fireplace to keep the floor clean. The dry chemical is shaken over the hot coals—a procedure that we feel is neater than using a pressurized extinguisher. Then the Chimfex is lighted and placed to extinguish the fire in the smokepipe carried outside by two men wearing asbestos gloves.
