McClennan Hails Rules

President W. Howard McClennan of the International Association of Fire Fighters called the recent adoption of Occupational Health and Safety Administration standards for fire fighter personal protective equipment by the United States Department of Labor “a major advance in our continuing effort to reduce death and injuries in the American fire service.”

Commenting on the signing by Secretary of Labor Ray Marshall of fire brigade standards, which will be applicable in 24 states, McClennan said, “Although only half the states are covered by these new standards, we feel they can have a measurable impact in improving conditions.”

The standards contain provisions covering protective equipment for feet and legs, body, hands, head, eyes, and face as well as for respiratory protection devices used by fire fighters.
