Dispatcher Fired, Firefighter Quits After Florida Condo Fire Review

A dispatcher was fired and a firefighter quit after a review of a fire that destroyed a 20-unit condominium complex last month in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

According to a dispatch from the St. Augustine Record, the report by St. Johns County officials listed “inactions and missed opportunities” surrounding the fire response.

The Record said the report concluded an engineer on the first apparatus sent to the complex should have investigated the first report of smoke more closely, and a dispatcher should have sent firefighters back to the scene. It cited “complacency in response” in the fire, which apparently burned unrecognized for 45 minutes.
