APPARATUS DELIVERIES: The Brevard County (FL) Fire-Rescue Department

By John M. MaleCKy

The Brevard County (FL) Fire-Rescue Department designed thisAMERICAN LaFRANCE pumper (one of four) for general firefighting and medical emergency response, explains District Chief Bob Thirkelson. The units also have larger water tanks for a strong initial attack.

Features/Equipment:

  • METROPOLITAN 148 chassis with 211-inch wheelbase and five-seat cab with 10-inch raised roof;
  • CATERPILLAR C7 330-hp diesel engine with ALLISON 3000 EVS automatic transmission;
  • AMERICAN LaFRANCE Twin Flow single-stage, 1,500-gpm pump with 1¾-inch front bumper line, two 1¾-inch crosslays, two rear preconnects (one 2½-inch, one with three-inch line to ELKHART Rapid Attack Monitor), and ELKHART Stinger monitor with extension;
  • UPF 750-gallon water tank;
  • ROBINSON roll-up compartment doors and four wheel well sleeves for spare SCBA cylinders;
  • ALS equipment, including MEDTRONIC Life Pak 12;
  • on-board refrigerator; and
  • light and power with WINCO six-kw diesel generator and two FRC telescoping floodlights.

SVI TRUCKS, INC. has built three air/light trucks for the San Mateo County (CA) Fire Department, which covers multiple jurisdictions. Battalion Chief Scott M. Jalbert of Cal Fire (contracted to protect the county) says the units respond to all second alarms and specialized calls.

Features/Equipment:

  • INTERNATIONAL 7600 chassis with 176-inch wheelbase and two-seat cab;
  • CUMMINS ISM 350-hp diesel engine with ALLISON 4000 EVS automatic transmission;
  • 16-foot body with ROBINSON roll-up compartment doors;
  • BAUER air compressor with six-bottle air cascade system and two refill stations;
  • storage for 44 SCBA cylinders;
  • seven HANNAY reels (two electric cord, two low- and two high-pressure air, and one ½-inch water);
  • electric on-demand water pump using above water reel and 60-gallon UPF water tank (to wash off SCBAs and for other utility applications); and
  • light and power with LIMA 40-kw PTO generator, two SVI Command Lights, and six WHELEN fixed scene lights on body.

The Jackson Mills Fire Company in Jackson Township, New Jersey, needed an aerial ladder, a rescue truck, and a utility truck. Captain Raymond I. Tremer says this SEAGRAVE rearmount saves space and money since it is designed to replace all three vehicles. Like New York City aerials, it has no pump or tank, thus allowing maximum storage space, and the heavy-duty ladder can address any situation.

Features/Equipment:

  • TP chassis with 236-inch wheelbase and eight-seat cab;
  • CATERPILLAR C 13 525-hp diesel engine with ALLISON 4000 EVS automatic transmission;
  • Force Model 100-foot aerial ladder with removable tip, 500-pound tip load at 1,000 gpm, ELKHART Scorpion ladderpipe, and 16-foot outrigger spread;
  • five CHAMPION rescue tools (one in extended front bumper compartment), and five HANNAY reels (two air, two electric, and one hydraulic);
  • eight-wheel well sleeves for spare SCBA cylinders plus rack for 10 cylinders;
  • RAMSEY four-ton portable winch with four receivers; and
  • light and power with SMART POWER 10-kw hydraulic generator and 10 FRC floodlights (two brow, two at sides of cab, two at aerial tip, two behind cab, and two on body).
