The American Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA) and its Pacific Northwest Chapter honored longtime life safety advocate Larry Glenn, deputy state fire marshal of the State of Washington, with the presentation of the Fire Sprinklers Save Lives Award at the chapter’s meeting August 14, 2007 in Seattle. AFSA established this award in 1998, to recognize individuals outside the fire sprinkler industry who help dispel the myths about fire sprinklers by generating public awareness about this life-saving technology.
Deputy State Fire Marshal Larry Glenn is a deserving recipient of that award. A few of the many reasons noted in the letter of nomination were: Larry Glenn’s fire jurisdiction was the first in the state to successfully adopt a residential fire sprinkler ordinance; he successfully championed an addition to the contractor law recognizing the need for residential contractors and designers; he facilitates a fire sprinkler contractor and AHJ forum; he established a credible certification program for NFPA 25 inspection and testing; he hosted eight preparatory seminars for NICET certification; he administered a state sprinkler retrofit program of state licensed boarding and nursing homes; and he stood as an example by installing sprinklers in every home he has lived in for the past 30 years.
AFSA President Steve Muncy presented the award to Glenn. After citing some of Glenn’s many efforts to enhance life safety through fire sprinkler technology, Muncy noted, “Clearly, Larry Glenn is exactly the kind of person AFSA had in mind when this award was created. On behalf of all AFSA members, I am proud to present this Fire Sprinklers Save Lives Award.”

As a 2007 recipient of the award, Glenn joins an elite group of life safety advocates including Maryland’s Chief Fire Protection Engineer John Bender; Broward County School’s Michael Garretson, deputy superintendent of facilities and construction management, and Jerry Graziose, director of safety; national homebuilder D.R. Horton, Inc.; Sugar Land, Texas Fire Department public education specialist Troy Holby; television news reporter Brendan Keefe, Houston, Texas; Windsor, Conn. Fire Marshal Ray Walker; Longview, Texas Fire Department; Dwayne Garriss, Assistant State Fire Marshal of Georgia; Ron Ivie, building official and fire marshal of Park City, Utah; Orange County (Calif.) Fire Authority; Alan Perdue, Guilford County emergency services director, and David Douglas, assistant fire chief of the Greensboro Fire Department; and TV personality Ron Hazelton, ABC’s Good Morning America.
