NFPA announces theme for Fire Prevention Week

NFPA announces theme for Fire Prevention Week

“Know When to Go: React Fast to Fire” will be the theme for Fire Prevention Week, which will be observed from October 5-11, 1997. In making the announcement, the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) noted that this year`s campaign will focus on home escape, since about 80 percent of all U.S. fires and fire deaths occur in the home.

Pointing out that a decisive response is often what makes the difference between life and death in a fire, Meri-K Appy, the NFPA`s vice president for public education, stresses that “no matter where you are or what type of building you`re in, if a fire occurs, it`s too late to start developing a plan. People need to know how to respond immediately in a variety of situations, and that takes education, planning, and practice.” The campaign will also address circumstances in which it may be safer for occupants to remain in the building if a fire should occur.
