Drill Of The Week: What’s For Drill Today?

Drill Of The Week: What’s For Drill Today?

Brought to You by FirefighterCloseCalls.com

The question “what’s for drill today,” should never have to be asked. Company drills should be planned in advance and the training officer/company officer should always be prepared when the day’s/week’s drill commences. However there are times when, for reasons beyond our control, we don’t have a drill at the ready.

Here are twelve drills that require little preparation:

  1. Don your SCBA in 60 seconds or less;
  2. Review hose bed contents and finishes;
  3. Remove, carry, throw and raise your primary ground ladder to a simulated rescue position at your station;
  4. Discuss all target hazards within your still district;
  5. Practice a hydrant hook-up;
  6. Review your apparatus operation SOG on response safety;
  7. Practice tying a handcuff knot or bowline knot for firefighter rescue;
  8. Demonstrate a simulated MAYDAY call on your portable radio;
  9. Discuss and demonstrate the various tool assignments;
  10. Review safe apparatus parking procedures for highway and other incident scene locations;
  11. Discuss the primary search operation used by your department for single and multi-family dwellings; and
  12. Review the contents of each compartment on your still company apparatus, what’s in it, how does it work, how do you service it, etc.
