As the use of helmet cams by firefighters becomes more routine, some are growing worried about potential privacy concerns.
A new report from CBS News looks at the issue, noting that the cameras are becoming increasingly popular, with more that 300,000 videos posted to YouTube. The videos are often used as training tools. But many fire departments are concerned about liability and privacy issues.
“We’re going into people’s homes, we’re videoing their personal belongings, we’re videoing their entry and exit points,” said Jim Brinkley of the International Association of Fire Fighters. “All of those things puts the public at risk. We don’t want to compromise that trust.” The report notes that the union does not support the use of helmet cams.
