One Dead in New York City Apartment Building Fire

One person died in a large fire inside a Hamilton Heights residential building Monday evening that left behind blown-out windows, a charred roof and several destroyed apartments, reports NBC New York (http://bit.ly/1AtdwgT)

The FDNY says the person was found badly burned. The victim has not been identified. 

Firefighters were on the scene at 512 West 136th St. as flames and thick black smoke billowed out from the windows of the apartment building.

At one point, flames were shooting out of a window with such force that they appeared to overwhelm a firefighter before he was able to jump onto the escape one story below.
