Vegas Firefighters Top “First Responder Challenge” with Largest Donation

(LAS VEGAS) – The Las Vegas Firefighters recently won the “First Responder Challenge” 2014, which recognizes the organization that raises the largest amount of donations for the Movember Foundation. On December 11th, they presented the donation of $5,350 to Mark Hedstrom, Director of the U.S. Movember Foundation, who traveled to Las Vegas to personally thank the firefighters for their contribution (pictured on the left).

The money donated came from the proceeds from their Movember t-shirts, which were sold throughout November. During the month of November, many of the firefighters also grew mustaches in support of the foundation’s mission to “change the face” of men’s health issues.

Scott Johnson, president of the Las Vegas Firefighters, says, “We are proud of this recognition and to present this check to the Movember Foundation in support of their praiseworthy efforts. We are grateful to be able to assist in the foundation’s mission of improving the lives of men affected by prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health issues.”

The First Responder Challenge is for any and all who work in emergency response; EMS personnel, firefighters, lifeguards, police officers, and all other response teams.

The Movember Foundation is dedicated to combating men’s health issues at every front. Up to 83.8 percent of the foundation’s net income is allocated to men’s health programs. The remaining net income (a minimum of 16.2 percent) goes to fundraising costs, retained funds, and administration.

The Las Vegas Firefighters is comprised of 628 fulltime members and 209 retirees. They serve to protect a city that covers 133.25 square miles (including large Clark County “islands”), nearly 610,000 residents, and several million visitors each year. They serve under the Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, which is an Insurance Services Office (ISO) Class One Department and is an Internationally Accredited Agency by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International. Their mission is to promote community safety by protecting life, preventing loss, and providing support and relief for those in need. The corporate office is headquartered at 502 South 9th Street, Las Vegas, NV 89101. For more information, please visit www.lasvegasfirefighters.com.
