Structural Firefighting: Firefighters Battle Four-Alarm Meriden (CT) Apartment Fire

Story and photos by Patrick Dooley

On May 9, Meriden (CT) firefighters responded at around noon for numerous calls reporting a building fire with people trapped and jumping.

Because of the volume of calls and large column of smoke seen while responding, Car 3 struck the second alarm before companies arrived, and the fire would ultimately go to four alarms.

On arrival, members had heavy fire conditions in an apartment building. One civilian was found burned on the ground outside.

An explosion reportedly occurred after members entered the building. Two members were also transported to the hospital, one with burns.

Many mutual aid departments assisted at the scene and covering other calls. Later in the day, Meriden had another working fire which was handled by some mutual aid companies.
