Inflation systems

Avon Inflatables now offers its FRB-310 fire rescue boat with three inflation systems: CO-2, Scott Airpack, and footpump.

Departments can choose between the two pressure options, either of which produces a fully-inflated rescue boat in iess than 30 seconds; the foot-pump is provided as a standard backup system for both.

Foam haz-mat trailer

The CESCO Foam Haz-Mat Trailer’s platform enables personnel to operate the foam/water cannon from the front.

The trailer, from Charlotte Equipment Sales Inc., features a positive hydraulic locking system for the brakes. It’s available with a tank capacity from 200 gal. to 1,600 gal. The hand-held foam applicators are from 60to 240-gpm and with an expansion range of 10:1 to 65:1.

Flow and pressure meter

Fire Research’s Portable Flow and Pressure Meter can simultaneously test the flow and pressure of any hydrant or pumper.

The meter measures most liquids, such as water and foam, and comes with a rechargeable battery and a charger.

Emergency light

Ez-Lite is a portable, lightweight emergency lighting unit that provides up to 90 minutes of bright light.

The light, available from Dual-Lite, plugs into any standard 120-volt, grounded electrical outlet. The unit comes complete with a disconnect switch that will increase illumination time up to three hours, as well as two extra bulbs for future use.

Master stream nozzle

Elkhart Brass introduces the SM-200, a Select-O-Matic master stream nozzle.

The SM-200 has a flow range of 500gpm to 2,000-gpm and all the features found on other Select-O-Matics. It adjusts to fluctuating water flow to maintain pressure for efficient firefighting streams, and it’s a constant flow from straight stream to wide fog.

Spill treatment kits

Three Spill-X spill control agents are available either in individual kits for acid, caustic, or solvent spills or in a multipurpose kit with two of each type of agent. All are dry chemicals that won’t produce toxic by-products when used as the manufacturer directs.

The agents, available from Ansul Fire Protection, include: Spill-X-A, which neutralizes and solidifies many mineral and organic acids; Spill-X-C, which solidifies and neutralizes many caustics and bases; and Spill-X-S, which is used to adsorb spills of many organic liquid solvents and fuels.

Ventilating system

Echo Inc. introduces the QuikVent, a new roof ventilating concept designed for use by firefighters to ventilate, trench, and breach burning structures.

The system includes an Echo power head with a large, rear handle and a patented skidplate for better starting. An Oregon FireBrand bar and carbide chain with a “droop nose” design is provided for easy maneuverability. The system also features a chain brake, an anti-vibration system, a throttle safety catch, a chain catcher, and handles.

Haz-mat kit

National Draeger’s Hazardous Materials Kit enables the user to determine if a particular gas or vapor is present in the atmosphere. The kit can also determine the concentrations of the contaminants.

Included in the kit are a Bellows Pump with stroke counter; a three-meter extension hose; a spare parts and tool kit; an air current kit; detector tubes; a handbook and matrix chart; and markers.

FireSoft announces the release of a new version of its Preplan System. The Tier I and Tier II inventory records conform to SARA, and there’s a new search and browse capability for locating MSDS information. Any preplan can be retrieved by phone number, preplan number, building name, and address; partial name and address searches are included.

Degreaser

A degreaser for cleaning up fuel oil, kerosene, and other petroleum-based solvents is being introduced by M.C. Johnson Co.

Bio-Petrol is a water-based mixture of emulsifiers, neutralizers, rust inhibitors, and cleaners. When applied to the spill, it breaks up the oil or gasoline and quickly reduces the fire hazard. It’s biodegradable and noncorrosive to metals.

Emergency message repeater

The Call Check Series 5700 simultaneously records and plays back telephone and radio messages for verification in emergency situations.

Series 5700, available from Dictaphone Corp., provides five minutes of continuous recording, with expandability of up to 40 minutes in five-minute increments. Users can scan the display to locate messages in the sequence they were recorded.

Suit check kit

The Suit Integrity Check Kit, available from Mine Safety Appliances, enables haz-mat teams to inspect encapsulating suits while in the field.

A user can check for leaks or degradation of the suit’s fabric by inflating the suit with air from one of the company’s air masks. A pressure gauge is connected to the suit and observed for a drop in pressure, which at a certain level indicates a leak. Testing with a soap solution determines the leak’s location.

Identification tags

Multimedia’s Fire and Rescue Identitags can be used to differentiate workers from onlookers during an emergency.

The tags are printed in black ink on a bright, fluorescent safety orange stock and are mounted in a heavy-duty, laminated pouch. They clip onto shirt collars or belts and can be carried when not in use.

Battery tester

Dowit Service Co. introduces an analyzer for cost-effective NICAD battery testing.

The Maintainer has a digital readout that shows milli-amp-hour capacity. It automatically sets batteries to the proper discharge level, and it eliminates battery memory while keeping battery packs in their own charging environment. It was developed to accept a large variety of NICAD battery packs for hand-held portable radios.

Two-way radio

The Communicator, a two-way radio from T-Berrv Electronics Corp., produces up to five watts on its six available channels.

The radio’s easy-access controls are designed for tough work environments and include a high/low power switch for conserving energy and a tone on/off switch for optional tone-coded channel privacy.

Haz-mat software

Arrakis Publishing introduces its Hazardous Material Tracking System, a software package designed to track Tier II reports by facility and storage location.

Information begins at the location screen and then moves to a list of materials stored at that location. A touch of the key brings up the DOT Emergency Response Procedure to suggest how to handle the problem.

Exhaust extractor

The Nederman Simple Exhaust Extractor is an economical and practical way to remove exhaust fumes.

The exhaust nozzle can be automatically disconnected from the exhaust pipe, a useful feature for vehicles that must quickly exit a building. The hose is available in fouror six-inch diameter, along with a corresponding rubber exhaust nozzle.

This high-intensity strobe light provides 60 double flashes per minute, according to the company. Built in a sturdy aluminum housing, the light can be used for mounting on the dash or rear deck of emergency vehicles.
